Dr Gabriel Rubinstein

Gabe is a biochemist and metabolic engineer interested in building sustainable bioproduction platforms from renewable and waste feedstocks. He has worked across diverse bacterial hosts, including several non-model organisms. During his PhD at the University of Georgia (USA), he studied the cellulolytic, anaerobic, extreme thermophile Caldicellulosiruptor bescii, helping to develop genetic tools for the organism and applying them to investigate native metabolism and engineer heterologous pathway expression. As a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Colorado, USA), he engineered Pseudomonas putida for the production of performance-advantaged bioproducts, including β-ketoadipic acid, from lignocellulosic sugar mixtures.

His current research interests include redox-balanced pathway design, bioprocess optimization, and waste-carbon valorization, which are being applied in the Wallace Lab as part of the BioFactory team for the Carbon Loop Sustainable Biomanufacturing Hub.

Outside the lab, you can find Gabe at the climbing gym, seeing live music, playing music in his bedroom, or on a wee walk to explore his new home in Edinburgh.
